The Naming of Discordion

Musical Epistles: Semi-monthly missives from Henri's travels in the world of music and accordion

Discordion got named in December, 2005. When it comes time for you to name your accordion band, feel free to peruse some ideas we thought of. Naming a band is hard work. Even when we agreed on a generic concept of "Discord/Accordion", it still took a while to wade through several alternate spellings.

Below, an "historical re-enactment" -- some of our conversation in rejecting all the other names.

After the group played together a few times we realized we felt like a band. So we had to have a name. We took suggestions at one rehearsal and printed up all the possibilities. At the next rehearsal there was a lively discussion:

“What happened to Tom Waits for No One?

“We can’t do that, Tom’s handlers are a little sensitive about the freewheeling use of the brand.”

“But he lives around here doesn’t he?”

“I bet he wouldn’t care if he knew.”

“Well, anyway we don’t want to type ourselves as a Tom Waits cover band.”

“Let’s eliminate the ones that would make you quit the band.”

“If we’re Spremuta I’m walking. It’s obscene.”

“No, it means ‘squeeze’ in Italian.”

"Bellows Lugosi…too cute…and too Haloweenee…"

"Bisonoric Orchestra…I don’t know what that means…"

"Circle of Fifths…too obscure for most people…"

"Counter Bass …huh??? Like a kitchen counter?"

"XsqueezemE…interesting…how could we work that into a logo?"

"Rock Me, Guido…don’t know what that “says”…

“Just rank the ones you like, the top three choices. And we’ll vote.”

“No, it has to be unanimous. We need to discuss it until we’re all in agreement.”

“OK, I like A Few Accordions More, like the spaghetti western "A Few Dollars More,” kind of sleazy but with a quiet menace like Clint.”

“It’s cool but what does it have to do with our sound.”

“What about The Ducharmers or Ducharmed, I’m Sure

“Charming, but too obscure, too in-joke. People outside the community wouldn’t get it.”

Accordion Threat or Accordion Assault? Yeah, it’s edgy. Do we want to be scary?

“Why not, we are scary!”

“Some of us are scarier than others!”

“I like Discordion but how do we spell it?”

“Don’t you think it’s strange that it has “disco” embedded in it.”

“No, it’s "dys" as in dysfunctional.”

“Discordion but with a slash thru the O like not allowed. Like Prince, an unpronounceable symbol.”

“Then put the slash between the s and the c.”

“Well, we’ve got the discord part going that’s for sure.”

“Keep it simple. We can tart it up later if it seems right.”

“OK, can we all agree, for now we are Discordion.”

“Yeah, that’s it. Vive, Le Discordion
