FOR ALL THESE HOMESCHOOL CLASSES,  the intent is to accept families who can make a good faith commitment to continue for the school year.  This is a small but very cohesive community, not a “monthly drop-in”. MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE IS TEN.

Another of Henri’s classes, SuperGirl Math for second graders, was  featured in a Berkeley Youth Radio/NPR piece which aired this Spring. Listen here. Although the grade level may be different, you can hear the same sounds in all Henri’s classes,  the sounds of deep inquiry, surprise, and laughter.

Henri’s teaching style and philosophy can be best described by example:
Meditative Doubling,  for a SuperGirl Math Class
Venn Diagrams and Students of Color, for fourth and fifth graders
Teaching Stories, reflections covering the gamut of Henri’s classes

IMG_0600For older students, classes consist of math, problem-solving, chess, and programming:

1.  Beast Academy from publisher “The Art of Problem Solving”.  Beast Academy is Common Core plus far more rigor.

2. Many hands-on class activities which supplement the text.

3. Computer programming (Scratch) and spreadsheets.

4. Chess — for its demonstrated ability to sharpen mathematical thinking.

Each week we typically spend 2/3 of our time on math activities and the remaining third on either chess or programming.

IMG_0717All classes go far beyond the text with many, many creative activities.  For example, when studying divisibility at the fifth grade level, we:

–play an invented outdoor game that requires fast recall of divisibility facts (+ good throwing/catching!)

–learn how use the MOD, INT, and DIVISOR spreadsheet functions to solve problems

— study “casting out nines” and solve problems from Colonial American textbooks

–figure out strategies for a solitaire divisibility card game
