An accordion learning community
For all levels of playing, there are activities that focus on building repertoire, honing technique, or playing in an ensemble. This table outlines the available options.
(See below for explanations of each event.)
AccordionWorks: A teaching and performance ensemble for students with 5+ years of experience. This has become the haven for those who did serious playing as children or who are crossover accordionists from a strong piano background. Has performed works of Guy Klucevsek and Astor Piazzolla. Currently on hiatus. Please check the website and newsletter for future dates. (Advanced Performance Ensemble)
Beginning Technique Workshops: Series of one to three classes that focus on technique rather than repertoire. Appropriate for those with three months to two years of experience. Offered every other month. Topics include sight-reading, learning by ear, etc. (Beginning Technique)
Camp AccordionLand: Annual August get-together of the local accordion clan for all levels of experience. Workshops, performances, discussions, and silliness. Features the maximum number of accordions per square foot allowed per state and per federal regulations. (All levels; Repertoire, Technique, and Performace Ensemble)
Intermediate-Advanced Technique Workshops: Series of 1-3 classes that focus on technique rather than repertoire. Appropriate for students with 3-6 years of experience. Offered once every three months. Topics include bellows phrasing and technique, what to play besides bass-chord-bass-chord, etc. (Intermediate and Advanced Technique)
Intermediate-Advanced Repertoire Classes: For students with 2.5+ years of experience. A recent series covered music from the series Amelie and lasted several months. An upcoming series will cover Tangos. (Intermediate Repertoire)
Practice Nights: A new concept in accordion practicing for beginning to intermediate students. Practice nights happen every other week and provide a regular time for people to practice together or alone, meet other accordionists, meet new repertoire, take a mini-lesson, or just hang out with other accordionists.
Private Lessons: Available weekly or semi-weekly for all levels of experience. Appropriate for students disciplined enough to commit to practicing on their own. For many, this is the most focussed way of improving. Students who have met each other through other classes and ensembles and who have compatible goals may double-up for paired lessons. (All levels; Repertoire and Technique)
Punk-Rock Workshop: Drop-in classes designed for students with up to three years of experience. Meets twice a month to learn tunes by The Ramones, Danny Elfman, They Might Be Giants, etc. Two other times a months, students continue to meet, practice, and play together. This is a supportive community for accordionists who would rather learn together, not just alone. (Beginning Repertoire)
